Semuliki National Park is filled with natural wonders and unique attractions. Below are some of the main highlights you can enjoy when visiting the park.
Wildlife
The park is home to more than 53 species of mammals, many birds, primates, reptiles, and plants. The best way to see these animals is through game drives, which are done in the morning and afternoon. These drives give visitors a chance to see wildlife even if they arrive late in the day. Nature walks are also possible, though they take more time and depend on your energy and pace.
It is best to visit during the dry season when the paths are clear, making it easier to reach different parts of the park. Some of the animals you may see include elephants, bush pigs, buffalo, water chevrotain, white-bellied duiker, Zenker’s flying mouse, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, mona monkeys, pottos, and galagos.
The birdlife is also impressive, with species such as the yellow-throated cuckoo, black-casqued hornbill, African piculet, red-billed dwarf hornbill, red-rumped tinkerbird, leaflove, swamp palm bulbul, lemon-bellied malimbe, chestnut-breasted negrofinch, and orange-cheeked waxbill.
Hot Springs and Semuliki Forest
The Sempaya hot springs are one of the park’s most famous attractions. They were formed by geothermal activity, though local stories say they represent a husband and wife who turned into hot springs. Today, the hot springs are considered sacred by many people, especially married couples and expectant mothers.
Visitors sometimes boil eggs in the hot water to test its temperature, while locals may use the place for cleansing or worship.
Semuliki Forest is another highlight, where you can see primates, birds, animals, and plants during guided walks. Vehicles cannot access the forest trails, making walking the best way to explore.
