Birds in Semuliki National Park in western Uganda fill the skies with beautiful songs that welcome every visitor. Birding is most enjoyable in the dry season because the paths are easier to use, allowing you to reach all birding areas. The dry trails also give you a chance to take nature walks and see colorful bird species, especially in the swampy areas.
The wet season is also a good time to visit, as you will find many bird species, including migratory birds that later return to their home countries. During this season, park entry and nearby accommodation prices are often lower because there are fewer visitors. This allows travelers to save money and still enjoy their safari, though some activities may be delayed if the rains are heavy. It is wise to plan your trip carefully.
Birding can also be done from a safari vehicle while observing other wildlife, but this is not always the best option since you may miss certain species and may not fully connect with the natural environment. Guided walks are better, as experienced guides will share information about the birds and lead you to the best spots.
Some of the bird species you can see include the long-tailed hawk, spot-breasted ibis, Nkulengu rail, western bronze-naped pigeon, yellow-throated cuckoo, black-throated coucal, white-bellied kingfisher, piping hornbill, red-billed dwarf hornbill, black dwarf hornbill, white-crested hornbill, white-thighed hornbill, black-casqued wattled hornbill, red-rumped tinkerbird, lyre-tailed honeyguide, African piculet, Gabon woodpecker, rufous-sided broadbill, yellow-throated nicator, Icterine greenbul, Xavier’s greenbul, leaf-love, green-tailed bristlebill, swamp palm bulbul, fire-crested alethe, northern bearded scrub robin, blue-headed crested flycatcher, Maxwell’s black weaver, crested malimbe, blue-billed malimbe, chestnut-breasted negrofinch, Grant’s bluebill, orange-cheeked waxbill, and many others.
Birding is usually done in the morning or evening, making it easy even for late visitors to enjoy. A day spent birding in Semuliki National Park is truly memorable and should not be missed.
