Semuliki National Park Uganda in April Guide

Semuliki National Park Uganda in April Guide

In April, Semuliki National Park receives heavy rains that flood some areas of the jungle. Visitors are advised to carry a rain jacket and waterproof boots to move comfortably through the wet trails. A walk can even lead you to nearby Batwa villages, where locals welcome you with songs, dances, and drumming. The trails also take you to birding areas, where the sounds of birds fill the forest. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the Ituri Forest, landscapes, and different plant species.

Semuliki is a young park known for its wildlife. Some of the animals you may see include leopards, forest buffaloes, hippos, mona monkeys, bush babies, elephants, olive baboons, black-and-white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and chimpanzees. These species are easier to spot during nature walks or game drives, though in April game drives can be difficult because of muddy roads. Vehicles often get stuck, so guides usually wait for the rain to stop before setting out.

Reaching the park in April is possible by road or air. By road, the journey can start from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala city. You can take the Kampala–Fort Portal route through Mubende, which is about 180 km and takes 4–5 hours, or the Kampala–Mbarara–Fort Portal route, which is longer at 465 km and takes 7–8 hours.

The longer route offers opportunities to stop at places like Lake Mburo National Park, Kyambura Wildlife Reserve, and Rwenzori National Park. Both public and private transport can be used. Public buses heading to Fort Portal or Kasese are available at reasonable prices, but booking early ensures a comfortable seat. If you choose a private car, a 4WD vehicle is recommended for the wet April conditions.

Air travel is another option, especially if you want to avoid traffic or save time. Chartered flights are available from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airfield, offering a quick and comfortable way to reach the park.

Visiting Semuliki in April gives you a chance to experience the rhythm of the rains, which bring life and beauty to the park.
